Is Tic Toc Terrible? Advanced V1

Level Low-Advanced.

Title: Is Tik Tok Terrible?

By Zon Petilla

Pre-reading: As you read circle or write down words you don't know in your textbook. Then, translate each word before reading.

Looking at websites like Youtube, you can find many people do not like the app for various reasons. First, let's define what Tik ToK is. Tik Tok, is a very popular app that kids and teens seem to enjoy. The app works by recording short videos under 8 seconds, being able  to reply to others Tik Tok users and videos, and also allows access to some copy written content.

As a person who has used both Youtube and Tik Tok, I can honestly say, I see the appeal. Tik Tok is very easy to use. Making videos with different effects like slow motion or 3x the speed, as well as quick editing tools makes it where content creation is so easy, a child can make content.

Tressicle's video titled "The Real Truth of Tik Tok" (1) states that the quality of the content seems very forgettable. First, unlike, Youtube where content is longer, and gives creators a voice, Tik Tok's short videos don't allow content creators to establish who they are and how they are different from other Tik Tok users. This creates a superficial relationship among users. Second, the videos seem to be endless memes. Memes meaning, it's just people copying each other or copying something from pop culture instead of making original content. When combing these 2 points, short video times and copying, Tressicle concludes that most users are just making forgetabel content in the masses instead of making content people will remember or care about. Creating great and unique content is part of the strategy for Youtube users to gain a following of people.

I interject a different point, not as content creator or as someone attempting to gain popularity, but that the app itself is fun. And the social sharing for the normal users is also fun. Most users I believe are not trying to make money and most users seem to be content with small followers. This leads me to consider that Tik Tok is really for amature video creators to get a chance to share small videos. Having kids and teens use the app, gives content creation to a bigger audience even if it's not professional or may not lead to a content creation career. Of course, I'm not addressing safety concerns  as the app is usable by kids, teens and adults as many have pointed out, but feel pretty positive overall.
